EZ way to rip video clips?

Whats an ez way to rip certain clips from certain movies so i may put them together on a time line??

ex. Like a music video.

I have lots of movies in .avi , mp4, divx, dvd.

Different for each format?

For DVD I would use DVDShrink to pull out just the part you want. I use DVDAuthor to put the video clips together.
For the other audio types, there are editor/cutter/joiner programs out there.
