Every once in awhile, when I see a new movie (well, old movie, I never actually SEE movies until years after they come out and they come up as material for watching on a date). Since I always make it a point to discuss movies with whatever girl I'm watching it with, and since I'm a girly man myself, there is an additional girly stuff section to these reviews.

IMDB

Overall rating: 9.9/10

On the surface, it appears to be your average acid trip movie.
A little deeper, and it becomes your average time travel theory movie.
In the last minutes, it becomes your average time paradox movie
And then, in the last seconds of the movie it all comes together - I'm not sure how to describe it, but it transcends the paradox - explains how the paradox is resolved, and explains why there are unexplained tragedies in the world.

Asexual stuff:
Thinking man's rating: 10/10
It's the first movie in a very long time to leave me with questions in my own mind. It's a movie that makes you think - and it's pretty fscking unsettling in what it makes you think about.

Attention span rating: 8/10
It has a few spots where you get bored of it, but it quickly snaps you back into the action.

Overall humor rating: 5/10

Blatent humor rating: 0/10
There's nothing funny said or done

Underhanded humor rating: 10/10
Many, many things in this movie made me snicker.

Plot difficulty rating: 3/10
Not too bad. Pretty straightforward. I attempted to predict stuff several times and was wrong as all hell

Underlying meaning difficulty rating: 10/10
My mind is still reeling.

Manly stuff:
Mayhem rating: 2/10
There is significant lack of stuff that explodes - though there is significant mischief twice, some violence, and a particularly amusing "accident."

Blood and gore rating: 0/10
There isn't any. Period.

Intoxicant rating: 5/10
A little bit of drug use, a little bit of alcohol, but the rating is so high because the movie is like one big, bad trip.

Pervert rating: 5/10
Some kissing, some making out, implied sex, implied illegal pornography.

Girly stuff:
Heartbreak rating: 5/10
Wah. If I say anymore, it's too much of a spoiler.

Leading man hotness rating: 10/10 (17 year old girl's opinion)
"I love you donnie, have my babies"

I command thee, watch this movie.

If you have any additional category requests, let me know and I'll add them.

like an inkblot test... sort of interesting, but making an inkblot is not exactly talent. its got some neat music video sequences, but the story basically sucks.

and yes i've read the "philosophy of time travel" text companion to the movie...

great movie. one of the few movies I've ever watched more than once... if you can get your hands on it, I'd highly recomend the director's cut. don't know if it was ever released on DVD, though.

it's one of those rare movies that makes you think and provokes discussion/debate.

Good movie - I own it. Hardly one of the best I've ever seen, though. If this is the first movie you have seen in a long time that makes you think, then you need to start choosing movies based on different criteria.

There is plenty of blatent humor in the classrooms.

There is blood and gore in one scene. Are you sure you are talking about the same movie?

i have to add Napolean Dynamite to that list.

Donnie Darko is up there as one of the WORST MOVIES I have ever seen in my life! EVER!!

I thought it was good but I don't see how it was a "thinking man's movie." That's kinda like saying the Matrix or Memento are "thinking man's movies."

it was made by the guy who came up with final destination right? that guy has a death fetish. it was an interesting movie, i get that 'the world is about to end' paranoia myself from time to time. too many weird parts in the movie though for me to recommend it for everyone.

have you seen waking life?

I thought it was decent, but this isn't the first time I've seen it wildly overrated. I'd give it a solid three stars out of 5.

I missed the beginning of it and watched the end on HBO awhile back. I had pretty close to no fvcking idea what was going on.

You might not have missed much. The movie does not try to explain some of the stranger things going on.
