Eyefinity + 6970 + crossfire questions

Due to some problems with my triple Dell U2412m's and displayport I'm looking for some eyefinity options. Assuming my new cable does not solve the problem here is what I'm looking to try:

1) When I get a second 6970 could I hook 2 DVI's to one and 1 DVI to the other card?

2) Assuming the above does not work should I get a DP to DVI active adapter? I see them for less than $30.

3) Or should I go for the new sapphire BF3 edition card that allows 3 DVI outputs from one card? Could a card with this hardware, obviously different than a stock 6970, crossfire successfully with my basic XFX 6970?

Thanks!

1) will not work with crossfire. If the cards are not in crossfire mode, then it will work for desktop tasks, but not 3d.
2) Yes
3) Depends on the price difference. If the BF3 card is more than $30 more expensive than a standard 6970, don't get it and buy a dp -> dvi adapter. The BF3 card should be able to crossfire with a "normal" 6970

Thanks a ton for the info! I'll probably go the route of the active adapter assuming the new cable does not fix the problem. Can't wait to get back to eyefinity goodness... though I still want BF3 to work properly with it.
