A little information would help...

What kind of surgery? Do you mean laser eye surgery, like Lasik?

I've always thought of doing the lasik surgery stuff, but the cash isn't there.

I wouldn't just b/c they haven't really been doing that kind of surgery for very long now, so we have no good data on LONG term effects... like 60 years from now our ayou going to need cornea implants ect...

well... think of all the times when they thought it was safe to use a medical procedure and it turned out 10 years+ to be very unhealthy...

breast implants come to mind as an excellent example, but that probably b/c i was just looking at some porno.

Imagine if the doctor cuts a micrometer off the proposed site, cutting into your optical lense, permanently screwing you for life.

You can tell I'm an American living in 2002 when the first thing I thought of was the ensuing lawsuit that would occur. :p

Yeah, but I the commercials in my area seem a lot like Mitsubishi commercials on the radio. For example: 0% interest and no payments for 6 months.

I was thinking about lasik too, but after reading stories of what happened to some of the unlucky patients, I decided putting up with contacts is better than not being able to see!

Anyways, the main thing about lasik is to get an EXPERIENCED and HONEST surgeon. I'd rather pay $4,000 knowing that the surgeon who's doing my eye surgery have done over 100,000 operations with less than 1/2% failure rate rather than paying $500 each eye at the laser eye center and know nothing about the surgeon. I'm not saying that the laser eye center is bad, I mean they might have superior surgeons, but going to tlec is just like going to a franchised hair salon, if you know what I mean.

Also, for lasik, they do a pre-test to determine your eye characteristics and one important factor is your cornea thickness. The thicker your cornea, the less likely you will have problems post-surgery. Ask your eye surgeon what your cornea thickness is and what is the avg thickeness of people who do the surgery. Also ask him how many operations he performed and what are his success rates and failure rates.

If you can wait out on lasik surgery, there is supposedly a new method called corneaplasty where they inject an enzyme (or drops) into your eye to soften up the cornea. Then you wear hard contacts for about two weeks while your cornea hardens. Pop out your contacts and you get 20-20. I believe they are doing clinical trials on this procedure now. Try searching in google for corneaplasty.

There are a lot of places doing it for around $500 an eye around here. Not that I would ever trust one of the cheap places. I'am a cheap bastard but there are 4 things I will spend the money on and they are all ball related :p.

As already mentioned, don't go to a cheap place. Their quality is not nearly as good as places where you pay more. This is advice from my father who works in that field.
