I was thinking about lasik too, but after reading stories of what happened to some of the unlucky patients, I decided putting up with contacts is better than not being able to see!
Anyways, the main thing about lasik is to get an EXPERIENCED and HONEST surgeon. I'd rather pay $4,000 knowing that the surgeon who's doing my eye surgery have done over 100,000 operations with less than 1/2% failure rate rather than paying $500 each eye at the laser eye center and know nothing about the surgeon. I'm not saying that the laser eye center is bad, I mean they might have superior surgeons, but going to tlec is just like going to a franchised hair salon, if you know what I mean.
Also, for lasik, they do a pre-test to determine your eye characteristics and one important factor is your cornea thickness. The thicker your cornea, the less likely you will have problems post-surgery. Ask your eye surgeon what your cornea thickness is and what is the avg thickeness of people who do the surgery. Also ask him how many operations he performed and what are his success rates and failure rates.
If you can wait out on lasik surgery, there is supposedly a new method called corneaplasty where they inject an enzyme (or drops) into your eye to soften up the cornea. Then you wear hard contacts for about two weeks while your cornea hardens. Pop out your contacts and you get 20-20. I believe they are doing clinical trials on this procedure now. Try searching in google for corneaplasty.
