eye problems and refresh rate

Anyone suffer with eye spasms when working in front of your PC? Someone here is telling me that this may be related to the monitor. I have my monitor set to 85hrz on refresh rate. Shouldn't that be ok?

I sometimes see little dots drift across my field of vision, but I read up on that, and it is considered normal, my monitor is at 85 hz, that is also considered PERFECTLY OK. If your eyes are bothering you a lot, I would consider upgrading to a LCD display. They are just one big active picture, no refresh rates, easy going on the eyes.

It's actually for work, I doubt they'll be sprining for anything they don't have to. Still, I'll see what I can do.

hahah... that's funny, I'd be outta here so fast my head would spin if I stopped working. Welcome to life in corporate Toronto.

It could be the floresent lights in your office.

floresent lights + CRT = unhappy eyes

Seeing how you're at work, it's probably not feasible to get a LCD. Eye drops help and look away for a bit and focus your eyes on something esle every 10-15 minutes. Don't concentrate on the screen for long periods of time.

I sometimes see flying elephants. 😉

85 refresh rate is ok. Higher is obviously better. Below 70 is bad.

Good luck.

my eyelid twitchs if i look at a 60hz screen too long, is that what you mean by eye spasms? if so, maybe your eyes are just more sensitive than mine.

Look away from your monitor often, like every 15 minutes or so as people said. Not only look away, but look at something far as well. Maybe look out the window, and stretch your legs while you're at it. I'm not sure if this is good, but I find that my eyes feel more relaxed if I shift my focus from far to close to far to close a few times, just to kinda stretch the eye muscles?

If your pc and monitor are plugged into the same outlet or power strip then split them up. If you have speakers next to your monitor, then move them. Lighting has already been mentioned and that can also be a cause of flickering.

Are you certain that the monitor is actually running at 85Hz? I've seen Windows say that your display is running at a higher refresh rate than it really is. In those cases, the default refresh rate is typically 60Hz.

This is very true and quite common. Get the newest drivers for your monitor, and choose 60hz, then go back up to 85hz just to make sure it's actually 85hz.

If this truly screws with your eyes, you could feasibly have your employer get you an LCD or a better CRT (higher refresh rates).

Its quite possible that your employer is legally obliged to provide a generally safe working environment. Taking care of your eyes should be a part of Health and Safety. Also, you are supposed to take a 10-15 min break per hour at the computer, if they sack you for doing this.... there should be laws to protect your own interests.

10-15 per hr break, that means up to 2hrs break time in an 8 hr day. They could fire you for being unproductive.

Pc's have been in the work force since the 1980's, the screen quality has never been better. Find the root cause of your flickering, it may very well be a simple fix.

True but Im sure that 10-15 minutes break for every 1 hour at the pc is what is recommended.

The lowest resolution my monitor here will support is 43Hz Interlaced. Why, I don't know - it's painful to look at. But Windows will still report 120Hz. RefreshForce does nothing for this - if I boot the PC with the monitor turned off, I get 43Hz Interlaced, despite what Windows says.
My dad's PC does this too sometimes - set to 85Hz, but it actually is doing 60Hz. Of course, he can't tell the difference between the two, but I can if I just pass by the room. The motion of the flicker just draws my eyes right away.

Its the refresh rate, if you don't like it. Get a LCD, I switched and will never go back.

I agree, switching to LCD is better for your eyes 🙂.

The only problem with LCD's si that they are so good 😕 Going back to a CRT after an LCD really shows flicker up. After using a LCD for some time I found I had to move upto 100hz instead of 85 to get a flicker free non headache inducing display
