But can you use Win+P to get it to work by selecting between extended/single-monitor or something? How much of a burden is this really, are we talking about not working at all, or just imposing a need to hit a keystroke combo?

You can not use that to Enable/Disable SLI or CF and i wouldn't what to have to have the side monitors off every time i was to use multi GPU gaming on the center monitor.
CF is on all the time plus my 3 monitors.

My browser and videos on the left and my gaming in the center and my pc meters and communications on the right.
I can game, browser, watch videos and pick up communications at will, sometime not even needing to AltTab as i drag the mouse out from the game and it auto minimizes or goes into window mode and just putting the mouse back and clicking sends it back into full screen..

Ah I see. Hmm, I've really come to enjoy that feature using eyefinity/AMD. Perhaps NVidia will incorporate the feature as more and more people embrace multi-monitor support with their cards, seeing how NVidia now supports triple (or quad) display on a single card. Seems like an easy fix that could be done in software drivers, without needing to design new hardware for the feature?

issue is not software. updated driver will not address this issue. it is a hardware issue. gpu needs another output bridge.

pair of 7970 should be here anyday.

In practice its not as big an issue as you think because of full screen windowed mode being able to use sli and because if you really need it a 4th screen can be added that gives you desktop in gaming. Both of these are decent alternatives.
