Eye Health: Is it better to lower contrast/brightness on the monitor in dark rooms?

Just want to know because half the time, I'm on the computer in a fairly dark room.

Well, high contrast irritates my eyes, so I tend to keep the light on in the computer room, especially when using the computer for an extended period of time. I always hate when I am in a classroom type setting and people turn the light off to watch something a regular TV set. Higher contrast does not equate to easier to see.

I would think that your eyes will tire quickily, but I do not think that you'll burn out a retina or anything.

Bump, because I'm in the dark right now, with Max Contrast and Brightness  and I'm not sure if this is bad.

It is usually better to lower the settings in a dark room. That is what many older (and maybe newer?) televisions did when the lights were turned out in a room. They automatically sense that it is darker and lower the settings. I can't remember what this feature was called though. Just my 2 cents.

It's also uncomfortable for me to have high contrast in a dark room so I turn it down. Usually when things are uncomfortable, they're bad.
