Eye empathy

We had a full size poster very similar to that in one of our training rooms at Fort Gordon. There was one of a dude whose finger got ripped mostly off because he forgot to take off his ring as well.

I had a chunk of something whack the lens of mine hard when I was working in the shop last weekend.
 
I wonder if it's as painful as it looks. Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's not a comfortable feeling, but I'm wondering if maybe it's not as bas as it looks.

Reason I say this is because usually you can touch the white part of your eye and not really feel discomfort. If you touch the colored part/pupil part with your finger, it hurts and is very discomforting. So I wonder if it just looks super bad (again, I'm sure it's somewhat painful)
