Apparently, for the past 4 months, Ive been under the title of a Level 2 Clerk, which get $12/hr, but after I sent my supervisor and the dept. manager a page long e-mail on how much I was getting screwed over, the manager talked to me and apologized and asked "Would a raise make the situation a little better?" He investigated and realized that I was being paid for a Level 2 Clerk position, when I shouldve been paid for a Level 3, which is $13.00/hr.

Now the question is, should I demand back-pay for the past 4 months? I think I deserve it, since I work 8-10 hours straight, without lunches or breaks. I do get paid overtime BTW (defined as anything over 8 hrs/day, or 40 hrs/week) The only problem with me asking for back-pay is that the HR manager (the one that decides my pay) is a lil cheap-ass, and our company's already suffering from budget cuts. We recently lost a big contract for 2004 and on with a major airline and the company will lose 90% of our business starting January 2004 because of this.

hmmmmmmmmm.........

wayyyy too much work for me to take lunches. I occasionally take like 5 minute breaks or eat some cereal or granola bars while Im working, but a full-fledged lunch I dont have time for. Id like to take the lunches and work overtime, but I also go to school so that makes it difficult.

Hi Max,

Congrats on the raise!!! An extra $160 a month is nothing to sneeze at. :) Being that you are intelligent enough to realize that you deserve more, successfully negotiate the raise AND realize that now is a bad time for your company...

..you're also intelligent enough to realize that while you DO deserve back pay (IMHO), this is a bad time to ask for that. They gave you the raise because they knew you were being underpaid and wanted to placate you.

I would not push my luck. That's just MHO. You are obviously a dedicated employee. You work thru your lunch because "the mission comes first." Kudos to you.

If you were supposed to be level3, then I'd definitely ask about it, since if they had done it correctly as they had intended, they would have been paying you anyways, so why should you pay for their mistake? I wouldn't "demand" it but would suggest that it sounds reasonable to get some backpay.

Each place where I've worked, when I didn't get my review on time (which would mean my raise would be late too), I've always gotten the raise prorated to when the review was supposed to happen.

Michael, thanks for those kind words. My manager said the same exact thing, believe it or not. After I sent that e-mail, he thought I was going to quit, so thats why he originaly was going to give me the raise, but then he found out the whole level 3 thing. (BTW, I just sent you a PM about your FTP :p)

Thats what I though also, but the fact is that many people in my department (and in other depts also) have been working a lot of overtime, after Sept 11 reduced the workforce in the company (I was one who got axed Sept 19th, but was called back this february). The problem is that the general laborers are unionized, so they still get their raises, but those of us in administration or management, we will not be getting regular raises this year. This is why some people in my department have been working overtime, with or without cause. One guy worked 61 hours last week, even though he has 60% of my work everyday. This is why my manager didnt want to "lose" me and offered me the raise in the first place.
