Extrernal USB Drive reads/autoloads very slow

Just recently, my drive started to respond very slowly when I try to access anything on the drive. Just to autoload it takes takes a few seconds on each folder instead of a few seconds for the whole drive. It works fine when used as an internal and the external works great with other drives, but suddenly the combination of the two started to go very slow (when they previously worked without any issues). Anyone know what this could be a result of?
