Hi, as per the title, my friend is experiencing these issues after formatting and installing windows xp on his computer. He was using Windows 2000 Pro before with no issues at all. His specs are...

Athlon64 3500+
MSI K8N Neo4-F
2x1 gb kingston value
BFG Geforce 7900 GT OC 256 mb
250 GB Western Digital SATA
Antec Sonata II with SmartPower 2.0 350W

It must take about 5 minutes to get to the point where he can do anything after starting comp (it hangs showing the desktop background, but no icons) I tried a couple programs, Guild Wars seemed to run smooth, and yet when i go install or uninstall any little program everything hangs for about 10 seconds.

I reinstalled his motherboard drivers off his cd, and updated them with the nforce4 ultra drivers off Nvidia website. Nothing is overheating, voltage rails SEEM to be steady using MSI Corecenter

Any suggestions would be appreciated.....

Try another SATA port. I had a mobo once that did the same thing and after switching to another SATA port all was well. Never figured out what was wrong with the initial port.

i just installed a Seagate 7200.10 SATA hard drive on my MSI Neo4-f to replace an older IDE hard drive i had. windows took a looong time to install and things seemed a bit sluggish, but once i installed the system drivers from MSI's website, things seem to work fine...

I will try switching sata ports and install those msi drivers in the next few days. thx, and i'll let u know how it works.
