Extremely slow copying from DVD to hard drive

Before I reformatted my hard drive, I backed up certain data, such as MP3s and mpegs, etc. on to a few DVDs. Now, when trying to copy back from the DVDs to my HD, it takes forever, sometimes says "50 mins remaining," which was much longer than it took to burn from the HD to the DVD! Furthermore, it will stop copyinng in the midle at some file and give me an Incorrect MS-DOS Function error. If anyone knows what is going on and can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Your DVD's could be scratched...

Is your DVD running on the same cable as slave to your hard drive? This will cause things to slow down.
