Extremely long power-on to POST time

Bitek

Lifer
I've been having a little prob with my comp, the time between turning on the power switch and the time it actually POSTs has been extremely long. Sometimes this is upto a min. What could be causing this?

I have a 4yr old asus p3b-f (440 bx) rad 7500, 2x 256mg sdram, a nic and sound card. Nothing is really new except I've put my old 366 back in as my cel 850 seemed to have died. (my sys was getting extremely unstable under win98, with spontaneous restarts, had increasing trouble booting into windows, and eventually failing to post. I'm actually wondering now if my proc was actually dead, and it was just the start of the slow post prob, but it seemed fine when I immediately switched proc's, and was posting normally afterwards.)

I did a (full install) upgrade to winxp, and added the other 256meg ram (a good crucial stick, functions fine, the older one is a kingston or a crucial, don't remem, both show up in bios.) My sys is perfectly stable now, just takes forever to post.

I did clear the cmos, and even removed the bat, but that did not seem to help. Could the battery be dieing? If so, where can I easily get a new one? What else could be causing this? WTH is going on?

Is there an option for fast booting in the BIOS?

Can you see the BIOS checking the memory? If so fast boot isn't on.

It might be called something other then fast boot, but it is the only thing I can come up with for now.

Im not sure if that is an option, but I will check it out. I don't see the computer testing the mem, as the screen is blank the whole time, and when it comes on it quickly says "512xxx kb ram installed " ( or whatever, ) 366 mhz celeron (for now) etc, then quickly goes to next screen, then the "loading windows" screen.

I am wondering if it is spending a long time on some self test, but I have no idea which one, and it doesn't fail, so there is not a good way to tell that I know of. Hmmm..

I checked my bios settings and quick self test is on, and mem checking is off. I should note that the long boot time is variable. Sometimes it boots normally, othertimes it can take a long time, anywhere fom 30 secs or upto a couple of mins. I actually leave the room and come back later because I get tired of waiting.

Radio Shack would be a good place to look.
