extremely bad hard drive performance!

My IBM 75 gxp 45 gig hard drive is getting ridiculously low scores in sandra. I'm getting around 5500, which is just way too low for this drive. I have a shuttle ak31a rev.3 mobo, and am running winxp with the default via 4-in-1's. What do you guys think I could do to get my scores up?

The 45GB 75GXP is the most prone to failure, so perhaps sectors are failing all over & S.M.A.R.T. is remapping to spares on the fly sending your drive heads all over the place...
Or perhaps not, I'm just a consiracy theorist 🙂

Sandra sometimes reports hard drive performance incorrectly. Does the drive feel slow? You would definitely be able to notice a drive running that slow. HDTach is a much better program for testing hard drive performance, but you'll have to pay $50 for the version that will run under Win2k and WinXP. Here's something you can try. Copy 650MB of data and time how long it takes. You should be able to do it in around 1.5 to 2 minutes. If it takes much longer then you know something is wrong. Oh, and don't forget to check and see if DMA is enabled.

690 megs took about 3 min. and 15 sec. I guess that's about right, so sandra must be just reporting the performance incorrectly..
