Extreme vertical banding on two monitors - what's causing this?

I have a pair of Viewsonic VA2223wm monitors, and they are both exhibiting really bad vertical banding. See below for a picture (the contrast was a little exaggerated by the camera, but not too much). The distortion is the same when I use a different video source, and it runs through the on-screen display window, so I think that means it's a hardware problem with the monitor, correct? I'm still under warranty, but before I pay $40 to ship these back to the manufacturer, I am worried that there is some kind of environmental cause. It seems like a huge longshot that both of my monitors are borderline unusable. What should I be looking for? The only thing I can think of is that I have a set of Logitech Z-540 speakers, but it seems like computer speakers shouldn't really destroy monitors, right?

Plug them into a different electrical circuit in your house (different room/different floor) with a good surge protector and see if they do they same thing in the new location.
