I have read the "which Linux for me" thread but I didn't really gain anything from it...Anyways, I would like to install Linux onto a laptop that already has Win Me on it. I guess I need help as to choosing which version to use. I want something thats stable, at least more so then Me...Laptop specs are: 600mhz, 12gig hd(already partitioned), and 64mb ram(will upgrade if necessary)

Personally I like Fedora Core 2. But other ones that are popular are Suse and Mandrake.

Always go for the newest versions of whatever OS you choose.

A upgrade in RAM would be nice. A modern Linux desktop has a similar appitite as WinXP. So it's sweet spot is 256megs. However if you use a minimalist window manager like Fluxbox or IceWM you will be able to get very good performance out of your 64megs. (Desktop managers like Gnome and KDE are full-featured, everything you can possibly want in a desktop setups. Ment to take advantage of modern computers). But the more the marrier.

If you want to learn a lot quickly and want as unix-like as possible check out Slackware.

I've tried a few on a 450Mhz P2 so far Mandrake10.0 was the easiest to setup, and cut the learning curve WAY down over my short expriences with RedHat 7.2 and 9.0

on a side not I downloaded several iso's of debian from various sites, every one of them was corrupted. I've been told debian is very powerful, but hard to install.
