They're filming a new episode for Extreme Makeover Home Edition 2 miles away from where I live. I used to wonder how they funded the new homes. They build new houses for people from scratch and use all top end appliances, materials. It turns out that everything they use is donated, including the labor. Construction companies and materials providers provide everything that is needed and then they supplement the labor with volunteers.

In case you are wondering what it takes to get selected - the woman who is the subject of this episode is a single mother of four. One of her children is biologically hers. The other three were adopted and are special needs babies. They were abandoned in hospitals or special care facilities and all have druggie moms. The adopted children are either HIV positive or were born with fetal alcohol syndrome or some other disability brought on by a drug abusing mom.

The cops won't let anyone drive near the house unless they are a nearby resident. They will allow people to park their cars nearby and take a shuttle bus in to watch the filming/construction. It's pretty interesting.

I love the show. Very interesting how they funded the houses. I always thought they just had a really big budget for the show for materials and used all volunteer labor.

The show does plugs for the company, so the show gets free stuff. The company then gets really good advertising for cheap.

Do they take any measures to offset the radical increase in property taxes after the rebuild?
