Extreme Cooling

I was thinking, if you have a water cooling setup (pump, resivoir, waterblock, etc.) what's preventing you from putting some real coolant into the system like freon or engine coolant? Wouldn't this like friggin beat the crap out of a water cooled system?

They do have this stuff, but it's fairly pricey. Kryotech sells something to what you're talking about. They cool down the processor to -40C.

Holy good jesus. I think it'd probably be cheaper to go to Pep Boys and ask em to fill up a little tank with some freon, no?

I was thinking that it might have something to do with the density of the liquids...don't ask.

I've been looking into water cooling, but curiously, none of the sites that I have seen that sell water cooling kits offer anything like freon.

eh, i don't think you need freon to cool your athlon. it's overkill in my opinion.

well, water cooling is overkill in my opinion... but that doesnt me it shouldnt be done, nothing is wrong with a little or a lot of overkill 😀

Freon is only used in high pressure systems. In your car, the air conditioning system is under much higher pressure than the engine coolant system (Ethlylene Glycol if I remember correctly). If you want to use liquids other than water then look at things that to not have to be kept under such high pressures to stay liquid. Also, I think you would be in danger of freezing some of the components in the cooling system if you tried to use freon. It seems like a big waste of money. Some engine coolant can be picked up nice and cheap and would be easy to implement in a water cooling system. I would look more that direction if I were you.

The other problem with cooling things that cold is condensation...
Unless everything is insulated (all the lines in and out of the computer and the part of the cooler not facing the cpu) all that water could drip onto your system and cause real problems....
Even look at an air conditioner in warm weather? All that stuff dripping off it? That could all be landing on your expensive hardware... bad new!

Yeah very tru, I didn't think of the pressure issue! I guess cuz it's got such a low boiling point? Heh, would have to use aluminum tubing and a monster pump 🙂 !

So you think the ethelyne glycol will work okay in a water cooling setup?
