Extreme Budget Video Card

What's the best extreme budget card to get? I'm putting a system together for basic use of internet and word and stuff... but I would like to still go for the best bang for the buck card in the $20-$40 range... (cheaper the better)...

The computer may be used for really light gaming in the future... (im talkin about just quake 2 and freddie the fish... not HL2 or anything)....

compatibility is a big issue... I'd like to stay with nvidia or ATI since they have great driver support.... but other gpu's are welcome if you feel they wont cause issues. THe person using the computer will not be technical.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.. thank you.

Sapphire Radeon 9000 64MB. It's a bit more $$ than your listed price range, but it'll hold out pretty well for light gaming over the next few years.

Look around the FS/FT forum, someone is usually trying to unload a lower end card to get one of the new top of the line card.

The lowest card i'd ever use isa Ti4200, but thats bcoz i'mma hardcore gamer 😀. For $20-40, u might actually be better off with onboard. But a GF2 MX400 treated me good for $34, like a year ago.

Radeon 9200 with 64 MB of RAM is only $48 or so.

Good image quality (can't be said of a lot of MXs) and it will last a few years. I put these in most al budget systems I build anymore.

FS/FT forum and a geforce 3 for $50 shipped -- this gives you enough power for anything out now (if you drop resolution down to 800x600 or 640x480) so if you change your mind or buy some new kids game that uses more 3D than you expected you've got breathing room.

A gf3 is much better than any gf mx card, and lets you use nvidia's great drivers (they haven't bothered to degrade image quality on older cards, just the FX line).
