Hey there. Can anyone here recommend a program for extracting audio from an .mpg file? I downloaded a video file off the web, but I want to extract the audio only in the form of a .wav file so I can burn it to a CD and play it in my car. I usually use TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 for this kind of thing but for some reason it doesn't recognize the audio from this file (it keeps saying file format is unsupported). Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

virtualdub can probably do this, though i haven't used it in a while so i'm not certain of that.

edit - you should be fine with any audio rip in terms of putting it on CD, it doesn't have to be a wave file - whatever format the audio is in on the mpg file is almost certainly supported by your cd-writing software.

If you have a Creative card just use its wave program (wave studio, or something like that) it comes in the software bundle, and use the record what you hear setting, start recording and play the mpg file. it will capture the audio and you can save it as a wav file and do what you like with it.

Hey, guys. Thanks for the feedback. I tried VirtualDub MPEG 2 (the regular version couldn't open the video file) but when I try to play it, it says "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format". How do I get around/fix that?

i assume the file plays properly in media player (or whatever)? Can you use 'direct stream copy' to copy out the audio file - you really don't need to encode it as .wav until you actually put it on the CD, and then it's automatic.

You could go looking for virtualdub 1.3 which i believe had a fair amount of compatibility that was later removed due to legal threats.

I've occasionally had luck renaming .mpg files to .avi, though I can't think of a reason that this does anything.

TMPGEnc can do it, even the shareware version. Go to File->MPEG Tools, then go to the "Demultiplex" tab, open your file, select the audio track and hit the go button (Or whatever it's called)

Hey, guys. Well, according to TMPGEnc Plus it's an AC-3/Dolby Digital audio stream (I'm a newbie..are those the same thing?). Now I just need to figure out how to convert it from AC3 to WAV. Nero doesn't support AC3, so I have to convert it unfortunately. Any ideas?

WMP has odd limits; this may be one of 'em. It could also have been a problem with TMPGEnc, as it has minimal AC3 support. Try demuxing with VirtualDubMod. And while you're at it, get Media Player Classic, which is a far superior media player.
