extract data from laptop without windows

Hey All,

I wasn't quite sure how to search for this so I posted a new topic.

I have a laptop that has Windows XP home (Compaq, a few years old (Presario 2500)) and Windows XP will not boot into Normal or Safe mode, it just continually restarts when you try to select a mode. How can I go about extract the data onto a backup hard drive or another drive since I can't get into windows. Normally, with a desktop I would simply move the hard drive but I'm not sure how to do this with a laptop. Any suggestions would be greated appreciated!

well, you can one of two things that i can think of:

1) boot up with a linux live CD and then perhaps use some software to burn the data on CD's

2) carefully take apart the laptop and take the HDD out. now it will be a 2.5" drive and i assume not SATA so you'll need something like this. 😉 good luck.

The surest way is to remove the 2.5" drive from the laptop, and connect it to an adapter like this:
2.5

Then just temporarily put it in a regular computer as a second drive. Remember, it is a Master - and unless you have the mini-jumper handy, you can't change that. So, temprarily put it in one IDE 2 channel as master and access the data from IDE 1 - the main drive for the host computer.

Or . . . spend a few bucks and mount the 2.5-in drive in an external USB case and just plug it in to another computer.
