LOL, britain. This is what happens when the nanny state is in full swing. Let's ban fire extinguishers, all the exits are fire proof and you could hurt yourself trying to extinguish a fire. Nope, nothing bad can happen from this move, nope.

There, there peasant, Momma Government will protect you. Can't have you using the wrong type of extinguisher, you're too stupid to know how to use it.

Dorset Fire and Rescue defended the move, saying: 'Obviously, in some cases, an extinguisher could come in useful but, with new building regulations, every escape route should be completely fireproof.'

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents backed their removal because different extinguishers should be used on different types of fire.

The level of stupidity just never ceases to amaze me. It's that government mentality, I guess they can't help it.

I wonder if Neckbeard (Hal9000) has a fire extinguisher. Would love to see his reaction when they come knocking at his door telling him that for his own safety he will not be allowed to own or operate a fire extinguisher, even if his flat is on fire, without facing criminal charges.

Good to see conservatives are done "solving" this country's problems and have moved on to the UK.

Pointing out just how stupid the progressive libtard nanny state mentality and stopping it, IS solving this country's problems.

Have you two been properly trained in the use of a fire extinguisher?

Yes, because the Conservatives here, who believe in allowing people to own scary black rifles that (apparently) sodomize liberal children at night, are the ones who are banning fire extinguishers because they're afraid people will use them wrong without training and get a booboo. :D

I've used one without training with no problems. There's a reason every dorm floor on campus has at least 2 of them openly accessible to anyone with hands and the 1/10 of a brain it takes to operate them.

Yes, our local FD had a day when everyone could come out and learn fire safety, including operating an extinguisher.

Regardless, the mere concept that you should be absolutely helpless to do anything for yourself, that you should wait and have the all-wonderful nanny state rescue you is the height of stupidity. "Hey, a cigarette butt set the trash on fire, I could put it out quickly with an extinguisher! No no no, the exits are fireproof, so just let it burn, go outside and wait for the nanny state to come help."

So are there any fires you wouldn't use the extinguisher on?

Yes, I've read the little sticker on the side.

The side of all the different extinguishers?

Thats nice. Certifications require going out once per year and putting out a fire.

All irrelevant. If I put myself in more danger by incorrectly using the thing, that's my problem, not that of the nanny state.

Ahh yes of course. irrelevant.

I think I've said enough in this thread. Thinking people will understand ():)

Depends on the type of fire extinguisher, but that's a problem for regulation and standardization, not banning. I do know that a modern ABC class fire extinguisher can be safely used on all common types of fires.

I also know, largely through common sense, that a fire extinguisher does not enable me to charge into a burning room. They're to contain small fires before they spread.

I've been trained in pretty much every type of fire extinguisher and have been certified for first aid and cpr a few times. That was just things we were required to know when I was in the Union. I also loved the like 40 something hours of OSHA and CALOSHA stuff we had to do.

I think you need to look again.

And in that did you learn anything that if you hadn't gone through that training, in the right situation, could of been dangerous?

I'm not saying its a good idea to ban extinguishers (im not even sure if thats even true) but to be nonchalant about there use is dangerous to yourselves and your family.

Care to share the knowledge? The only situation I can think of is a fire on a stove where using the extinguisher could knock a burning pan over, or the fuel source for the fire is still turned on, rendering the extinguisher useless.

Again, no fault of the extinguisher and solved with a little bit of common sense.

Also, ABC Fire extinguishers are rated for the following:
http://www.fire-extinguisher101.com/

Class A extinguishers are for ordinary combustible materials such as paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics. The numerical rating on these types of extinguishers indicates the amount of water it holds and the amount of fire it can extinguish.

Class B fires involve flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, grease and oil. The numerical rating for class B extinguishers indicates the approximate number of square feet of fire it can extinguish.

Class C fires involve electrical equipment, such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers and outlets. Never use water to extinguish class C fires - the risk of electrical shock is far too great! Class C extinguishers do not have a numerical rating. The C classification means the extinguishing agent is non-conductive.

:hmm: Can't decide if you are trolling, or if you are serious.

In my opinion every home should have an general purpose extinguisher in the kitchen, and in the garage.
