Finally got around to touching up the photos from our trip Dec-Jan to Iceland. We went specifically to try and see the Northern Lights. Despite living in a state that can regularly see them I had never seen them before. I was always out of the state or it was cloudy when they happened.

As you might expect it was very cold and wintery in Iceland over the winter

We based ourselves in Reykjavík for the trip and rented a 4x4 for the trip as we were headed out of the city and didn't know what the road conditions would be like. We generally lucked out on those conditions but there were a few times I was glad we had the 4x4 given the height of the snow on the road

We headed out on a glacier hike where I managed to hurt myself rather significantly. That said it was a beautiful hike - I just wish I could have enjoyed it more instead of being in near constant pain.

Nice photos. Iceland has long been on my wish-list. I just can't convince my wife to go.

There is no such thing as bad weather. Only bad clothing for the weather.

Everyone I know who has gone to Iceland has loved it. I'm not sure it's my cup of tea, but I'd give it a shot.

We got new gear for the trip because we were going to be outside for hours at night to get pictures of the Northern Lights. Wool layer + synthetic layer and heavy hiking pants and I was still cold for those pictures (fine the rest of the time though!)

What's good clothing for a hailstorm with baseball-sized hail? :p

Only thing I don't like about Iceland is there aren't many trees. Otherwise, I think I could live there.

Wait 15 minutes then go outside. Baseball-sized hail won't last for an entire vacation. :)

It is a commonly used phrase in the outdoor industry. Intended to be used with common sense (don't walk into the center of a tornado and assume clothing will help). In the context of "should you or should you not go" on a dream vacation: get good clothing and go.

Yes, I'm familiar with the phrase and I think it's a dumb phrase :D

Obviously, one can poke holes in it in temporary extreme scenarios. But the intended meaning still rings true. Go out and enjoy life rather than worry about temperature, or wind, or rain.

I've been hailed on about 5 or 6 times while hiking (albeit just dime to nickel sized). It wasn't a problem. I've snowshoed in -7°F weather with -30°F windchill. Just keep warm by moving with the right number of layers. I've hiked in downpours--just have a good rain jacket. The scenery once the rain ends can be fantastic.

"Just do this", "just do that", the weather is still bad, you're just prepared to make it somewhat tolerable :)
You're talking to someone with Goretex hiking boots and a good rain jacket, I happen to love the rain, but the cold can fuck waaaaaay off, way the fuck over there. IDGAF how pretty it is.

Multiple layers (especially multiple pants and hats), that includes layers with warmth and an outer layer that stops the wind, lobster claw gloves, and a hand/foot warmer packet if stationary. No problem with anything that I've ever encountered. I've been out many times when all other things were closed due to the windchill. I've been out when my insulated water bottle had the water freeze solid. No issue at all with the right gear. Not "somewhat tolerable" but actually fun and pleasant.

They make heated clothing too (either electrically or chemically). But my main issue is mostly trying not to overheat and sweat in the cold since I tend to have too many layers on.

Bully for you, I think wearing all that gear sucks balls and detracts from my enjoyment of any situation. People enjoy different things, and "there is no bad weather" is a mantra to sell gear.

That's absolutely the biggest thing. A mondo ultrawarm jacket only works in a very small range of temperatures, and you're gonna eventually be uncomfortable if you're doing anything more than sitting on your ass. Layers can be added/removed as needed, and they also create airspace, with increases the warmth beyond the base materials.

My standard upper body layer count for winter is five. A thermal shirt, Tshirt, buttonup shirt, thin oilcloth vest, and a BDU jacket. I can add to that a wool vest, and an overcoat, but it seldom gets that cold here anymore. I'm comfortable all day, from before the sun comes up, to high noon.

There is bad weather. Hot and humid is impossible to fix. The best you can do is get naked.

There's always this...

I'm pretty skeptical of using it for work, but it'll definitely protect you from hail. Bonus is people will give you plenty of room :^D
Please tell me that's an April Fools Day video, please?
