external zip drive/ata100 controller conflict

Hi,
I cannot boot into win98se using my external zip when I run my hard drive at ATA100...Any ideas on how to get around this? I plan on reformating c: and reinstalling everything since even after removing the zip from device manager I cannot use ATA100 . Something must acting up in the registry during bootup. External zip has no jumpers for master / slave....can the promise ata100 be run as slave?Will buying on of those parallel port to usb adapters I have benn hearing about help?
