external widescreen on a Dell 9100

my boss has a Dell 9100 with a 15.4" widescreen @ 1280x800 running XP with a GF4 Ti4200 graphics chip.

he wanted a bigger external screen for the office so i recommended the 2005FP.

it arrived......... but i can't get it to recognise the native resolution of 1680x1050, and, the only option the "screen properties" dialogue box gives me is the stretch desktop across both screens which doesn't even work. all i get is his desktop background badly stretched across the external screen.

is this a vid-drivers that can be fixed by updating the drivers, or a winblows screwup that can be fixed by hacking some .ini file?

cheers

I used to have a Ti4600 in my desktop system years ago. I bet the resolution is limited to the onboard graphics memory since I had a similar issue. I now have a 6800GT that allows 1920x1200 for BOTH DVI and VGA. Here are a few things you can try:

When you have both monitors hooked up does changing the resolution of one effect the other? Like setting the internal ( probably #1 ) to 1280x800 then selecting the external ( probably #2 ) and increasing the resolution of #2 causes #1 to decrease in the Display Manager.

Use the dxdiag command in the Start/Run box to identify what driver is currently installed on the system. You will find this information in the Display tab. The last four numbers listed in Version in the Driver section IS the nVidia driver version.

Get newer drivers from nVidia if the current version is LESS THAN 5x.xx. They don't have to be the very latest, just ones that have the nView option. Use Driver Cleaner or other utility to clean the old version off before installing the new version.

I have the nView Desktop Manager running but you can also access the options through the standard Control Panel/Appearance/Settings. You will need to set the nView Display Settings to either CLONE or SINGLE.

the drivers are 67 series dated Oct 04.

the only options the laptop will give me for the secondary display are 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200.

1024 is too low, and distorted.
1280 is far too distorted as a 5:4 aspect res.
1600 won't display as it is too large.

any ideas?

You might need to install the monitor driver to have access to the 16:10 aspects of the 2005FPW. You still might want to get a 7x.xx series driver to see if it allows additional resolutions.
