External USB HDD - Read & Write

Ok, I know there is a work-around in SL that enables read/write on NTFS drives. Is there any other way that I can read&write on a hdd in both operating systems? Can I format the drive and set it up as FAT and be able to r&w?

As I have it right now - the hdd is setup using NTFS. I use the external drive on my win notebook and use it for work. However, there are times that I need to put files on my home computer (mac) from the drive. Its no problem to copy them over but then I need to go and connect it back to the notebook to delete the files. It would be much simpler if I could just do it all in one process.

Thanks

Yea, as long as you don't have files larger than 4GB, FAT32 will work just fine.

crap. there are a bunch of files in the 8gb range. any other options?

NTFS for Mac OS X or NTFS-3G for Max OS X

Cool, thanks for the links. But I think I am just going to stick with the old way of doing it. I transferred 500GB of info from the external to the iMac via USB. I then formatted the external drive for a nice clean setup. Now I am transferring all of that data back over my network. Its going to take awhile but whatever.

Ok.. NTFS-3G has worked pretty well for my limited use, just as a FYI.

I just downloaded and installed it. It took about a hour to transfer a 5GB file. At this rate its going to take a year to get all the stuff back onto the drive. Lets see if it works 🙂

Ok, thats weird. It got to the end of transferring the data and I got an error message saying it couldn't transfer the last file for some reason. Then I went into the drive's info and it shows that I can only read. I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in and same thing. I restarted and I am still unable to write to the drive. Need some help!!

Sometimes the driver will hiccup. I don't have the terminal command handy, but just do a restart and see if you still run into the same error.

I don't know what happened. It was strange. I rebooted and re-connected the hdd and still nothing. I formatted the drive again in windows and after it was done connected it to the mac. It then recognized it and I was able to move all of the info onto it.

Thanks for the help guys!
