External USB drives /drive swaps???

Today in the OfficeMax flyer they had an external USB cd-rw for call for $58; Now I don't need another cd-rw, but would it be possible to use the external casing w/ a different drive? I the drive I would want to use with is a pioneer A04. I would just sell the cd-rw or something.
