I just bought the notebook hard drive enclosure in the link above.

The included USB cable has two usb plugs one on end. One is I think a standard USB plug and the second shorter one is power only (computer doesn't recognize drive when that plug alone is plugged into the computer).

I put a 40 GB Samsung notebook hdd into the enclosure, so I think I don't need to plug in the second power cable, but I did get one error while doing some large file transfers.

Is there any danger of the hard drive seeing too much power if I plug in both USB plugs into my laptop?

(you can click on pics in link above to see pic of double pronged USB cable)

The second USB connector is to assure adequate power to the HDD. Most of my external notebook drives can use that or better, a separate power module with a pin connector. One USB port is usually not enough to run an external HDD even in notebooks. With two connectors one may be wired for data and the other for the 5 VDC needed. They give you two - use 'em!

No danger of damage from overpowering a single platter 40 GB notebook hard drive?
