External USB 2.0 HDD and Burners

USB2 goes at 480Mbps, or 60MB/s.

IDE goes at 133MB/s.

If I have a USB2 HDD, wouldn't the limit be placed on the USB2 transfer speed? Similarly, if I had a USB2 Burner, USB2 is slower than the IDE transfer, right?

Correct. How about external SATA?

eSATA>Firewire>USB 2.0

USB 2.0's 480Mbps is highly theoretical. In practice you won't get anywhere near that.

If speed is the primary concern, eSATA is the best choice.

My T42 doesn't have eSATA. What can I do to address this problem?

one of them might do the trick(some are USB I think)

Also some SATA cables are quite long you could probably hook one to your mobo and out the back of your case through a expansion slot.
