External USB 2.0 Harddrive Problem, need suggestion

Hi,guys
I have a IBM T23 which only have usb 1.1
I am planning to upgrade to USB 2.0 with a PCMCIA card and
trying to connect an external notebook harddrive.
Unfortunetely, the pcmcia can only supply 5v 500ma power while
the harddrive needs 5v 1A power supply.
google the network and looks all pcmcia card can only supply
500ma/port. even you have the usb and ps2 power cable
anybody can fix the problem for the T23?
I am sure some of your guys have the similar problem,
your suggestions are really appreciated.
btw, the notebook harddrive works with the T23 USB1.1 port

500ma is the most power USB is designed to deliver. You won't find any USB card that delivers more power than that. The external drive has it's own power supply. Only small notebook drives can run off of USB supplied power because they draw very little power.

thanks for the reply. But the external drive works fine with
the T23 USB 1.0 except the speed is really slow.
I think the USB interface on the machine can provide more power
otherwise the harddrive will not work properly.

USB 1.1 is DOG Slow. I am suprised it even works at all with it as a lot of the newer external USB drives I have worked with want 2.0 and will not work at all with 1.1. The Current has nothing to do with the speed. USB 1.1 is slow. It was never intended for fast hard drive transfer. USB 2.0 is 40x faster. Get your USB 2.0 card and it will go a LOT faster.

Also edelbrock is correct. 500MA.

That's really weird. but the external harddrive does work with the usb 1.0 port
which supposes only provide 500ma power. I double check the harddrive inside
it's travelstar 5k80 need 5v 1A power.
who can explain that 🙂
btw, I don't think you can put other usb 2.0 card except pcmcia card for a laptop.
any other solution? don't wanna dump my laptop, love it.
thanks a lot

By USB Card I figured you would understand I meant PCMCIA. Better Yet Card Bus. My close friend had the same problem with his Dell P4 Lappy. Slow as heck till he got a PCMCIA Cardbus USB 2.0 card.

Currently problem is that I have two PCMCIA USB 2.0 Cards with both USB/PS2 power
cable but the external harddrive still doesn't work unless I put it in the usb 1.0 port.
spend several hours still can't figure it out

Are you sure your USB 2.0 cards are installed in Windows with the right drivers? Can you plug say a USB mouse into the 2.0 card and does it work?

Yes, everything esle works fine like usb mouse, pen drive and card reader.
but the external harddrive doesn't work but it's the most important reason
I purchase the PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card. Don't know why it can't provide enough
power even with the external usb power cable for the PCMCIA card
