I am looking for an external TV tuner to pick up over-air broadcast. I basically want something to hook up to the projector in the living room... We don't have (or want) cable or satellite, so those are not options. I basically want a box that I can hook up to an antenna and the projector and watch TV, the ability to receive HD broadcasts would be a definite plus, but I don't know if these even exist...

Anyone heard of anything like this?

Sure, you're looking for a HDTV tuner. There are plenty of them, as not too long ago HDTVs were only sold as monitors.

Sure. Some of the satallite receivers are able to pickup OTA signals w/o any subscriptions. I was shopping around for one earlier this year, and all the new ones run >$100. However, you can find used ones on ebay or craigslist for much less.

I recently bought a MyHD-MDP130 PC HD tuner card that I use with my projector and my Sony CRT. I'm using a VGA cable from my computer to the PJ and component cables to the Sony. It tunes analog and digital channels and also you can view unencrypted QAM channels off your cable. It's a hardware based card so almost any old computer with an available PCI slot would work as the card does the output and doesn't use your computer's video card, and hardly uses any of the computer's CPU.
