External test boot on off loop

Well given that I can return the motherboards I'm not really concerned about cost at the moment. My microcenter was about to close after ketchup's post about getting a Z97 so I went and first tried to get the 1820 CPU again (this time ordering to pick up online, which worked for a monitor their salesperson couldn't find but their site said was in stock) sadly they definitely didn't have it.

I wanted to avoid getting a 97 because apparently they have more compatibility issues with OS X which I hope to dual boot at some point, but right now I just want to figure out what works so I'll try this motherboard and if it works hopefully that will give you at least some useful information while I return the other 2.
 
I am very happy to say that with the Z97 my test boot was successful. I plan to finish the whole build tonight and I'll update then but I want to thank everyone that's posted so much and chusteczka double for helping and finding more help for me. If there's anything else any of you want me to do or check that might help you figure this out more or just cause you're curious about something I'd be happy to do so.
 
I am so glad you have it working and that these guys were kind enough to step in and help fill in. I am also happy it seemingly wasn't a Gigabyte issue since they are my preferred brand, and that it wasn't a dead or broken cpu. That new board looks nice and I wouldn't worry about current incompatibilities with OSX, that will get ironed out over time since it is a relatively new chipset.

Sullyy, you must have felt a huge relief when the system successfully POST'ed. I am happy for you.
 
Nice to see the OP back on track, too bad that yet again we cannot determine from afar whether the cause of the failure was an incompatibility or a DOA board.

If you check post #42, you'll see that the OP exchanged his original board for a new one of the same model. So I think that's pretty conclusive evidence that at least some Z87 boards won't take a Haswell Refresh board without an updated BIOS.
