Im an old guy who needs some help. I bought an external Samsung ssd. I plug it in and it shows under my computer but when I click on it says please insert a disk? I changed the drive letter but that didn't help. I have tried to run the troubleshooter but starts and then gives me an error. Thanks for any help you can provide. David

Which model of external ssd are you installing ? What version of windows is installed ? Does the drive appear in disk management ? Can you rt click the drive ? What options are available ?
Can you post a picture of the disk management window showing the new drive ?

It is a Samsung t5 ssd 1tb. Windows 10. When I go under my computer It shows the drive but when I right click on it and click properties it shows 0. Under disk management it says removeable H: no media. I hope this helps you to help me. Lol thank you for taking the time.

It worked until I rebooted and then the same thing to insert a disk. I reinstalled windows from an iso and it worked until I rebooted and then back to insert media. Very frustrating.

@Kerzon

Does it show up on the bottom-right of the desktop as a device you have to manually "eject" before you remove it from the USB port? If so, eject it and plug it back in. See if that fixes it.

Does the device appear in Device Manager ? Look under Universal Serial Bus Controller with the name USB Mass Storage . Flagged ? Hit Enable/ Uninstall/ and reboot.

Otherwise, contact Samsung support.

Sounds like it is being installed as an external optical drive. That points to a driver problem.

fixed. I reinstalled windows, mounted and unmounted. followed a bunch of tutorials and it is fixed. I have no idea what it was that finally fixed but at this point I am just glad it's fixed. Thanks to you all for the help. David
