External SSD Hard Drive Set Up...

IGBT

Lifer
I have a Sabrent external HD box i want to mount a SSD into and use like a USB drive via a USB cable. I have a KingDian SSD 240 gig I would like to use. Any thoughts on what I will see when I mount it in the box and USB / power on? Will it plug and play? do SSD externals need any special preparation??

And afaik most USB drives will not let windows recognize it as SSD, so you will lose some advantages like trimming etc. Better is to use factory external SSD

I thought trim was an internal mechanism, all windows is doing is invoking it in addition to SSD's self invocation?

Also, if it is USB 3.0 it should have UASP, which does support trim command.

Not like trim is critical, you are just forcing the cell empty anyway.

Probably greatly depends on what the adapter is. Thats why i would assume that brand USB drive supports everything. I didnt really looked at it but my SSD tools or windows for readycache didnt recognize drive in USB box from Lacie (which by it self is ok brand), but worked well in other cases.
