Souncards don't really need much bandwith for decent and with built in Sound on Mobo's, wouldn't it be nice to truck along your own sound and if I was to get one today then it would be USB just for the fact that PCI is fading and add the fact that the external USB device has the ability to alter speaker volume and balance on the unit itself insted of calling up a progran is beneficial as well.

I'm going external because my shuttle doesn't have a free PCI slot and I run a stereo headset out of the speaker+mic jack so i can't run my 5.1 off of one jack. Therefore I need an external soundcard so I can use my speakers also.

You can run the onboard and external soundcard at the same time right?

no, the internal resource is limited.

Most sound cards have a mic plug along with the standard bunch of plugs, which (I think) means you should be able to have surround sound and the headphones hooked up at the same time.
