I'm looking for some advice on setting up an external RAID 1 system for storing digital image files. My PC is four years old and I'll likely replace it in 18-24 months so I'd like an external box I can simply unplug from my current machine and plug into the new one, whatever it might be.
Current PC:
Dell XPS, circa 2005
Win XP service pack 3
Pentium 4 Processor 550 with HT Technology(3.40GHz, 800 FSB)
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (2x1GB)
1 Free Firewire 400 port
2 Free PCI slots (one slot next to video card, may be too hot to use)
1 Free PCIe 1x slot
I've been doing a bit of reading and it looks like I can get PCI or PCIe 1x based Firewire or eSATA cards.
My main use for the drive would be image storage and some image editing. Any advice on whether eSATA or Firewire would be the way to go? Something different entirely? Brand recommendations? I haven't bought anything yet so I'm completely open minded as long as whatever I end up with works and provides data redundancy.
Edit: Looking at 1T or 2T mirrored capacity (2T or 4T total).
