External PCI-USB/Firewire... Does Such a Thing Exist?

I was just wondering if there are any products or if it is even possible to have a PCI device connect to some sort of external interface that would then convert the signal into Firewire or USB2.0? I would think it a long shot, but it would come in handy for hooking stuff up I thought would only run on a desktop on my new laptop.

I'm not recommending this company to buy from! They just had a pretty good picture of what I think you might be interested in:

TigerDirect

They also have USB to Parallel, USB to 10/100 LAN, USB to Serial, USB to PS2 and USB to SCSI.

If these guys have this stuff, do a goole search and see who else has them.

Why don't you just get a Firewire or USB 2 PCMCIA card? I'm not sure I understand you.

Sounds like what you want is a combo PCI card that has Firewire and USB 2.0 ports. I have that in two systems, and from there I go to a pair of hubs - one Firewire and one USB 2.0. Lots of devices can be appended. Adaptec's card is good - so is Orange Micro. There are others as well.

Eug and Corky... I think he's thinking the OTHER way--he HAS USB 2.0 and/or Firewire... but wants to hook up a PCI device to his laptop... so if a converter exists, he could plug in, say, a sound card externally... or more importantly, a legacy card. Or, possibly even a ATA card... ooh, that could be neat. 🙂

LobsterSan--this could be an interesting device to hook up legacy cards. If you find one, let me know!!! 🙂
