external mouse

My second computer is a P4 2.0 Notebook with 512megs of ram, 2 usb ports, ps2 port and the usual connections for a laptop. I am running XP pro. My question is that alot of the time I use the notebook plugged into power on a desk. I am considering getting an external mouse while the notebook is stationary at home. Since I have mainly used desktop computers, I am more comfortable using a mouse over a touchpad (even though I am getting quite good with touchpad). What is the recommended connection for notebooks, usb, or ps2? From my understanding, ps2 will disable the touchpad while it is connected. That is not a big deal. I would rather go with usb. Also, as far as drivers go, should I use the generic drivers in XP? or load the drivers? Is there a posiblility of conflict with both mouse devices active?
Thanks in advance.
