External mouse on laptop, cursor skips around

I plugged an external mouse into my laptop and now the pointer skips to the right every few seconds. It works fine without the external mouse. The external mouse is a regular MS ball mouse that works well in my other system. I'm running Windows 2000 pro on it.
Anybody know how to fix this? Thanks.

the problem is sometimes caused by mouse software. the software puts in a registery entry that the computer doesnt like. If you do have some sort of mouse software installed, remove it and delete the registery entry. It should solve the problem. If it doesnt, it could be just the mouse. try cleaning the ball and wheels.
