external monitor w/laptop

I have an external touchscreen monitor that I've hooked up to my Dell Inspiraon 6000 via the VGA port & PCMCIA slot(to replicate the serial port needed).

everything works fine when the laptop is open, however, when I close the laptop, the video signal to the touchscreen is killed and so is power to the PCMCIA card.

any way to get around this? I would think this is basically simulating a docking station...

If you, in the power settings, tell the system to do nothing when the lid is closed, then that will fix your problem.

Sure its simulating a docking station. Problem is its not a docking station. When in a docking station the laptop automaticly chages its settings so it doesn't go into standby mode when the lid is shut. So you'll need to go in to the control panel and the power managment settigns and change it so that it won't go into standby mode.
