Hi --

I have a strange problem with a Win98 machine with a GM56E-V modem.

This machine and modem were working fine. However after a power cut (no surge -- fot on switch job!) the PC appears to be unable to communicate correctly with the modem, reporting that the modem is not responding whilst attempting to dial.

The Control Panel/Modem/diagnostic tests show the ATIn responses ok.
Using Hyperterminal to talk to COM1: directly allows me to dial manually using ATDT, but reports "NO DIALTONE" even though I can hear a dialtone.

After dialing using the Windows dialer the Modem log contains the following. It seems ok for the first command, then nothing.

I have trieed deleting and reinstalling the drivers, with no effect.

Can anyone suggest what else i might try?

Many thanks,

Ian

I had a US Robotics modem that just died 2 days ago during a storm. It got zapped by lightening, and when I turned my computer back on , I COULD hear it trying to dial, but could not connect anymore.

Win XP told me there was no dial tone too, or it would tell me "unable to communicate with the modem". I think yours may be dead just like mine. You may be able to hear a dial tone, or hear it trying to dial, but chances are , the lightening damaged enough of the modem that it's basically useless.

I think, like me 2 days ago, you're just screwed. Wish i could give you a better prognosis.

Its certainly looking that way, unfortuantly... I got to try it on another machine last night, with the same results, or lack thereof.

What's strange is that after a lightning hit, that's something you would expect. But after just switching the power off? Most odd...
