Why would you want to plug a microphone into an audio output?

The mini plug on the side of the NUVI is for the directions to be heard over the car stereo, when connected appropriately.

I'm not talking about the headphone / audio output on the Nuvi itself. I'm talking about the microphone input on the Nuvi's cradle. It's a Nuvi 760. The Nuvi 3xx, 6xx, 7xx and 8xx series all have microphone inputs on their cradles.

Why? To use your voice for turn commands?
Oh, Ok after searching around (thanks for the linkage :disgust:)
I see it's for bluetooth.

For all the Nuvis with bluetooth, it's for better voice "clarity" when using the speakerphone feature (user and professional reviews all say that using an external mic. does make a difference, especially directional microphones like the one I have). With the 8xx series, it's for bluetooth speakerphone and voice recognition / voice commands.

Yeah it'll work, but it will look like hell with all that cable and adapter and stuff hanging off the cradle. I had a transmitter plugged into mine to play the mp3s through the radio and it's just too much crap in the windshield area for me.

I'm going to get a new HD car radio setup so I'll just use the aux in on that.

Thanks.

All I needed to know was that the adapter I linked to would work for my specific application.

I have a custom mount in my car that the Nuvi cradle goes in since I hate having crap suctioned to the windshield. The mount hides all cables attached to the cradle.

I'm also going to do a discrete custom mount for the microphone. As for the audio output, I have a thin cable that pops right out of my dash that I connect to the Nuvi when I use it. The cable has a 3.5mm plug on one end that goes into the Nuvi's audio output and RCA audio plugs on the other end that connect into the audio in w/ interrupt feature from my head unit. It's pretty nice. It's like the bluetooth speakerphone feature of the Nuvi is integrated w/ my head unit. When the Nuvi speaks a command / direction and when a call comes in, my head unit automatically pauses whatever is playing and plays whatever the Nuvi is outputting.
