External mice not recognized?

So I haven't posted in here in quite some time but I was hoping you guys (and girls?) might be able to help me out so as to avoid a full reinstall.

For the past few weeks, any external mice plugged into my laptop (an XPS16, not that it should matter), is unfunctional. While the usb dongle is detected, and the drivers are installed, the mice will not function.

Meanwhile the laptop's built-in touchpad and the keyboard on my K400 all-in-one (Logitech) are working just fine. So it really is only external mice that are having the issues.

So far I have tried running a sfc check and uninstalling/reinstalling the USB and Mouse drivers, as well as the Setpoint software.

Please help! And many thanks in advance.

Tell us more about the mouse you are trying with this.

Is it a wireless Logitech? If so, have you checking the unifying software to make sure it is paired with the receiver?

Yeah I've tried the unifying software and nothing is detected. Moreover, even with a standard corded USB mouse - no workie.

Have you been in, or updated, the BIOS lately?

You may want to take a peek, and make sure your USB ports are active with emulation enabled. This image should represent the Advanced screen pretty closely:

Good idea! But I don't think it's a hardware problem as when I plug the dongle in, Windows detects and installs the hardware, eg., the mouse, it just doesn't work! On the K400 I have the mouse and keyboard are even on the same dongle and the keyboard works fine while the mouse is unresponsive.

Over the past 6 years, I have had one Logitech mouse and one receiver just die. I did buy a refurbished set, but I am not sure if they were part of that set.

In my case with the mouse, the mouse just stopped responding one day, and it would not respond when I tried to remove and re-unify. It happens. Buttom line is - if the unifying software can't find it, and it has known good batteries, time to replace it.

I would go and uninstall all logitech software, then go into C:\Program Files\Logitech and make sure that folder is also deleted

restart

Do the below without any usb devices attached

then in devices and under Universal Seerial Bus Controllers, right click on your touch pad and uninstall all devices.

Do the above without any usb devices attached

Restart

Let windows reinstall everything you just uninstalled

Restart again

When windows fully loads plug in the mouse usb receiver, it should now work.

Had this same issue plenty of times, I believe its to do with a driver install that does not complete that locks resources and i've found the above method to fix it everytime.
