Hey all
I've been in the market for an external HDD for awhile. I just got into video editing and my 30GB Ipod just isn't cutting it anymore. I was looking into getting a 500GB HDD and putting it into an external enclosure but they are all so bulky and I'm going on a trip to Ireland this June. I'm already carrying a Sony Camcorder with charger, a Nikon D50 with charger, and a laptop with Charger. I would love to have a portable external HDD that I can just plug one cable in for power and data transfer.
I've been looking at the 2.5 inch form factor drives because they're small and portable. I am getting a Macally 2.5 enclosure because it's like the only one that has USB and Firewire, I like firewire because it will power the drive on any system and I will be using this on MAC and PC. I'm looking at drives and I can get up to 120GB-160GB with the cash I have but I'm wondering if having an IDE interface would be slower than a SATA? Would I notice a difference with data transfer and write speeds?
Should I just get a desktop sized sata drive and deal with the bulk? It would give me more storage at a lower price.
Lastly what should I be formating these drives as to work on both MAC and PC? My school has MACs which I do all my video editing on but then I like to back it up on my Desktop that has a 1TB drive. I tried NTSF, works on PC but not on MAC, and then I tried formating the drive on MAC but now it doesn't work on my PC.
Any suggestions are welcome
