External HDD caused Finder to Stop Responding just a heads up

this was kind of a WTF moment for me.. my problem is solved but I just thought I'd post about what happened in case anyone cares or also runs into the issue (doubtful but who knows).. and I do have a question at the end if anyone makes it that far into this thread..

I was simply browsing the net on mac mini 10.6.1 with my external hdd connected (via firewire).. and if it matters another USB external hdd also plugged in.

Well Finder decided to stop responding (thats what it said in activity monitor)
I rebooted the computer and finder wouldn't respond at all, rebooted a few more times. And since the software update button popped up I figured ok I will let it go to 10.6.3 and maybe that will solve my issue.

Well after that did not help, I unplugged the external drives one by one to see if that was causing the problem, and sure enough it is the external connected via firewire that is causing Finder to hang.

If i unplug that drive my computer works just fine, I plug it back in and Finder stops responding. So I am guessing there is something wrong with my external drive?

I saw this thread http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=434498
and tried to follow some of the steps in it.. from resetting pram and deleting the ds store file w/e that is. No such luck.. and unlike some of the others in that thread I cannot access my drive via terminal. When I try to, the system hangs.

Oh and its a 750gb drive with two partitions both are formatted NTFS

and for what its worth.. if I plug the drive in, I cant even get any apps to open including disk utility so I cant use disk util to identify the problem

So I figured I'd do a little more troubleshooting.. I plugged the drive into my Windows 7 laptop to kind of figure out if it was hardware or software.. and in Win7 on my laptop it was able to see the file system and all data in tact. Well I decided that I should probably copy the data from that drive over to another external hd just in case (other external is formatted HFS+ so I bought macdrive 8 and all and was about to start the process).. Anyway, when I plugged the affected drive into my win7 laptop again it popped up and said would I like to scan for errors.. I figured sure what the hell, 2 minutes later it said it was done.. I plugged it back into my Mac and all was good.. Go figure.. lmao, so I bought macdrive 8 for no reason but whatever I suppose all is well again.

One question I'd like to ask though, is there some sort of software I should use to test my drive just to be sure there is not some hardware problems with it? I mean the drive is like 5 yrs old at this point too.. and hell maybe I should replace especially with all the important data on it.. but any recommendations?

I have 2 FW drives (daisy chained), as of 10.6.3 I have seen the system hang for a few moments (maybe 10 seconds) when browsing in safari as for some reason the external hard drives spin up. I don't have time machine turned on. Don't know what's up with that.

Yea, this happens to me all the time. I can't figure out why it's happening, and it kinda drives me nuts. I wish there was a way to force OS X not to spin up drives unless you specifically click on them.
