External HDD and computer scanning it

Whenever i plug my external hdd into the usb port, my computer always scans it for songs, videos, pictures, etc. I was wondering if there was a way to disable the computer from scanning it. Thanks in advance

Yes, go to microsofts homepage and download "powertoys for WinXP", amongst other things you can disable scanning of external HDDs. Great tool for tweaking winXP.
