external hd won't recognize in XP

I have tried to attach a external HD to my computer in order to do a backup, but I can't get it to recognize in XP. When I plug it into the USB port, it pings like it has been recognized, but the letter drive doesn't show in XP. What should I do to get the letter to appear? Many thanks.
