So about a year ago I took an IDE HD out of my system, bought an enclosure and set it up as an external drive.

The problem is, Windows sometimes doesnt see it.I'll plug it in via USB, windows will "ba bong" and the safely remove hardware icon shows up in the tray....but then about 10-15 seconds later I get another "ba bong" like I unplugged it, but I havent.

This happens not all the time but quite frequently, any ideas?

Thanks.

I don't think so, the HD always stays powered up when it gets booted from windows.

The correct drive jumper settings for an external IDE hard drive are "single-drive Master" (just "Master" on non-Western Digital drives).

The IDE-to-USB converter boards in external housings have had various issues over the years, includig overheating. Like everything else, some converter chipsets are better than others. Maybe it's time for a new enclosure?
