External HD not recognized under Firewire

COMPUTER: TOSHIBA SATELLITE P35-S209
OS: WindowsXP Pro w/SP-2.

I attached a 20GB HD to a USB 2.0/Firewire 3.5 external HD enclosure. The HD is visible while using the USB port but not under the Firewire port...!!!!

The Firewire port in the external enclosure is the 6 pin type and the port in the computer is the "i.Link" type, (4 pin) so, I also got me a 6 to 4 pin Firewire cable.

As a test, I bring the HD today to the office and connected via Firewire to a co-worker's notebook computer via a PC Firewire card with the 6-pin connector. The connection was done using a 6 to 6 firewire cable. Guess what...????? The drive worked fine...!!!!

Any ideas...????

P.S.

Altough I'm using XP with SP-2 I download and installed the following patch:

"WindowsXP patch: Inconsistent Gap Count can cause 1304 devices to not enumerate".
http://www.microsoft.com/downl...bb2&DisplayLang=en

but still no luck.

This patch is suppose to be already in SP-2.

Thank you very much.

Just a guess here...havne' tplayed with Firewire much at all.

You need to apply power to the external Drivve because the 4pin doesn't...whereas the 6pin does.

(I think)
