External HD for laptops....What works?

I'm at college now and I have both my desktop and laptop here. I'm thinking about brining my desktop home over Christmas break, and only keeping my laptop here. The problem is, I have 30+ gigs of stuff that I want on my desktop HD. What are my options for external hard drive hookups? And keep in mind I am a college student with a limited budget.

look for a usb or firewire external case for a 3.5 hdd

use that for you destop hdd
